10月30日 Welcoming the TWINS!!Well I know it has taken me two and a half days since our amazing little boys were born to get another post out but I have not been able to tear myself away from them and my amazing wife. But without further ado............................................
We welcomed our twins into the world early in the morning on Wednesday October 28th 2009
First to arrive was
Cooper Thomas Hostetler arrived at 5:18 AM wieghing in at 7 lbs 2.8 ounces and 19 inches long
Followed by his brother
Cooper is on the left and Brady is on the right displaying their yellow summarine gear.
Well it has been quite a ride. Time to give everyone a little update on how we came to welcome them into the world and a little of our journey since then.
I left off in my last post that Carolyn had gotten to 5 centimeters and that baby A (Now Cooper) was engaged in the cervex. We had gotten this far because of the amazing staff and my amazing wife all working together.
Here is where I have to take a quick aside and say that
The University of Washington Medical Center Labor & Delivery Rocks!!!!
Every one we had involved in our care has been amazing. Everyone brought something different to our care and made sure we were fully informed to what was happening and helping us work through the induction, labor, eventual C-section and caring for Carolyn and the boys afterwards. We coudl not reccomend UWMC and staff more. They worked with us to allow us to have the birth experience we truely wanted and made sure we were fully informed all the way along about what the options, risks and benefits were. Great care and we loved sharing our experience with everyone!! Thanks UWMC L&D Staff!!
Well once we were able to get Baby A to engage in the cervix the decision was made to rupture the bag of waters. Which we did and Carolyn's contractions started to pick up. They also began to increase the pitoson to help the Labor move along.
With the labor really begining to pick up Carolyn got her combined spinal epideral. Great decision to get it early to allow for a low dose throughout the labor. You will see why soon enough. With the labor picking up and Carolyn having the Epidural placed we decided to have her try to get some sleep because we had already been in the hospital 30 hours going through the induction and in that time Carolyn had probably only gotten 3-4 hours of combined sleep in 10-25 minute increments.
I worked on giving Carolyn a little massage to calm her as things were prepped before getting her able to relax after the epideral was placed.
![]() We got her to sleep for a good hour or two after working through a bunch of things to make her comfortable enough to ge the little bit of sleep. The doctors came in and checked Carolyn a little after midnight and found that she was ready to begin pushing. So the first huge plus for the epideral was allowing Carolyn a bit of rest before she started pushing. So after 36 hours of labor induction it was time for Carolyn to start pushing. Once again here I have to say it again my wife is amazing. Crazy amazing.
At this point in the process I was so excited I could harldy stand it. I could not stop moving and bouncing up and down. Little did I know we were not close to meeting the boys yet.
Well Carolyn quickly learned how to really pus and things were showing very good progress and at an hour in I was able to see the head of Baby A when they were hecking things. As if I wasn't excited enought. At this point I was jsut jumping out of my skin. So exciting. Once again little did we know we still were not all that close to meeting them.
I think this picture of a tuckered Carolyn from pushing for 2 hours at this point and a big cheesey grin on my face and our friend Kelsey.
Well another half hour went by and the doctors checekd again and Baby A really did not progress much more from where he was earlier. The options were discussed again and we decided to start and try to use a bunch of different variations of positions to labor in along with increasing the pitoson.
Here is the second reason the early low dose epideral was awesome. Over the next two hours Carolyn was pretty fully mobile trying out different positions to help get those boys to come.
She tried a modified sitting position with legs up and pulling on a sheet to increase her ability to push through the bottom.
She then moved onto a few different squatting positions to see if we could get gravity to help get these boys moving. No Luck.
Here we are a good three hours into full on pushing 39 hours into the induction. You can tell that Carolyn is pretty tired here. In fact she was beginign to drift off between contractions and fall asleep. Someone was tired! but amazingly she did not lose her sense of humor through it all.
I know because I made some very well timed comments (NOTE: unless you are very practiced and really REALLY KNOW your partner I do not advise trying this) that got the room a good laugh once Carolyn laughed at them.
For one you need to notice the blue vomit bag which is one of many I held that night as Carolyn pushed past any mental, emotional or physical barriers she had during the labor.
HOSS: "As my old football coach used to say 'If you ain't puking you ain't working' good work Carolyn! Keep it up!"
I lov emy wife she can be working harder then i have every worked at anything in my life and still laugh at my jokes - either she thinks they are funny or she just loves me that much to still humor me.
She also moved to trying the on all fours laboring approach and I was the helper to push on her back so she had soemthing to push against to really get a great push.
Well another half hour went by and they checked her again. So we are at 39.5 hours of induction and there has been no movement for the last 2 hours.
The doctors checked a few more things with having Carolyn not push and helped us make the call that even though Carolyn was giving it her all and doing amazing pushes focusing all her energy that her uterus was jsut too tired to help her enough. So we deciede on the C-section.
Third great reason for the Epideral because all they did was up the does from the low dose that let her move and labor and she was awake and ready for teh c-section. The doctors prepped the OR(Operating Room) for Carolyn and we went into the OR around 40 hours into begining induction.
Carolyn was so tired and without having to focus on pushing my job for the 30 minute procedure was really to keep my wonderful wife awake.
We were focused on each other when we got to hear the first cry from Cooper as he was born. Here is where the tears started fro both of us. So SO HAPPY.
The boys were born a minute apart and they were perfect. Just amazing.
Here is a picture ofo teh two boys next to each other in the OR jsu tminutes after they came into the world. Here we are in the middle of the checks on Cooper. Currently the fall reflex which is why Cooper does not look happy while Brady is just chillin all bundled up while his brother goes through the tests. Awesome!!! Tears were still flowing here!!!!!
Then once Carolyn was out of the OR I got to introduce the boys to here again before she crashed for some well deserved rest. As soon as I had a chance I got me and the boys with me sporting my Seattle Family of Multiples T-Shirt. From there we went to the postpartum floor at UWMC and once again was amazed by the staff. So helpful and with so much great information and guidance as how to work through everything with our new boys and with Carolyn recovering. It has been an amazing ride with our boys here. I have been more busy then I could have ever imagined and enjoying myself more then ever before even though I am more tired then I have ever been before. This parenting thing really does imediately change everything. Everyone always says that and I thought I knew what that meant before they boys were here. But I now know untill you are here you really cannot understand it. I thought I did but I didn't untill 2 days ago. I mean I was already so excited to meet them and had already fell in love with them but WOW this is so much better then I could have ever imagined!!!! Let the journey begin!!!!! I also have to give so many props to my wife Carolyn. She is simply amazing. 36 hours after birthing our twins and she has confidence and calmness to guide our two boys to begin some tadem feeding. We are all still learning but these are precisous times that are going way to quickly. Well that is all for today.
MY BOYS ARE HERE!
Welcome Cooper Thomas (Left) and Brady Edmund (Right)
